Troop 505 is located in Arlington, Virginia. Our unit is able to trace its roots to the 1930’s -- including through the first known photo of our Troop’s Scouts sitting on the steps of our Chartered Organization, Mt. Olive Baptist Church. www.mtolivebc.org
We have an enduring commitment to serve our diverse community and provide our Scouts opportunities to push themselves through advancement, troop activities and patrol leadership opportunities. Many will reach Eagle rank, but they are not overly competitive; they just like to have fun.
We spend as much time as possible in the outdoors. Every month and weather permitting, we go camping, hiking, and/or other activities. Every year we have at least 2 or 3 major camping trips including skiing, whitewater rafting and/or shooting sports (rifle/archery). Additionally, we attend summer camp at Yawgoog Scout Reservation in Rhode Island.
We feel strongly about giving our Scouts as much leadership responsibility as they can handle, which is often more than they think. Events and activities succeed to the extent the scouts can get themselves motivated and organized. Our deep adult leadership cadre is there to provide guidance and resources, but the Scouts usually are in the lead.
The troop has on average 16 to 24 Scouts, organized into patrols of typically 7 to 10 Scouts. Most patrols have a mix of new, middle age and older Scouts. Leadership within each patrol is rotated through elections twice a year. The Patrol Leader Council, composed of Patrol Leaders and the Senior Patrol Leader, meets once a month to discuss troop issues, plans and schedules.
The Troop meets weekly on Mondays from 7 - 8:30 pm at:
